Poor instructions, but toy is nice. Works well after I figured out what was the problem. Dec 30, 2006
By Irene My son who has recently turned 3 years old LOVES this toy. My sister has just gave it to him as a birthday present yesterday.
The instructions are not very clear. It took me some time to figure out how to make Thomas work properly. It requires3 AA batteries, one at the bottom of Annie and two on top (you need to remove the upper part to insert the batteries). This was ok in the instructions, no problems at all.
After placing the batteries, filling the water tank and Thomas with water, my son was so frustrated to see there was no red light in the funnel and that it was not making any sound, nor puffing steam. I thought it was just a matter of waiting a few minutes, but nothing happened.
I noticed that all water that was filled inside Thomas came off from the bottom, I thought that was the problem, but I think this is supposed to happen as there is a place for the water to be stored on the left of the water tower, so I guess the excess of water really needs to come out (If you don`t want your floor to be wet, be sure to assist your child and have a towel handy to remove the excess of water that is stored at the bottom of the water tower everytime your child fills in Thomas with water, or they may make it fall on the floor).
After many attempts to make Thomas puff steam, I decided to search on the Internet for instructions on how to use this toy and I found a manual on line where I saw there is another on/off switch button at the bottom of Annie.
I took my son`s train and noticed that this bottom was on the off position, then I switched it to the on position, placed Thomas on the tracks, but then again, nothing happened. Then I decided to replace the batteries with new charged ones and, voilá!
It began to make sounds and puff steam.
The instruction manual that came with the toy doesn`t show this button in the picture or mention it anywhere. So if you have purchased this toy and it`s not working or if you are going to purchase it, check if this other button at the bottom is switched on, if it still does not work, put new batteries on (requries 3 AA batteries).
I think these are the tricks.
You also need to show your child how to use it in the beginning. It is important not to fill the funnel from where the steam comes out with water (I think children may want to try to put water in there), there is a small whole on Thomas where the water must be poured into, but after I showed my son how to use it, he learned it without problems.
My son has been playing with it all day and it`s working very well.
I will only give 4 stars because the instructions are poor, but the toy is a nice one and works well. My son is a huge Thomas the tank fan, he has lots of trains and hundreds of tracks and he really loves this steam train.
If you are looking for a present to a child, also consider buying the wooden trains. My son loves these plastic trains, but he also loves the wooden ones. They are more expensive, but very nice for children and he seems to interact more with the wooden trains. There are also the die cast trains, less expensive than the wooden ones, but my son says he prefers the wooden ones than the diecast versions.
He says that the Steam Thomas and the wooden ones are his favorite.
Anyway, it varies from child to child. This is what my son says that he likes. :o)
Hope my review will be helpful.

Fun Set, Easy to Use Nov 05, 2006
By Jen
"full time mommy, full time teacher"
My mom got this for my son a few weeks ago. I was surprised how much he enjoyed it! He loves his Thomas and the Big Loader set, but because this set didn't move as many things around, I was worried he wouldn't enjoy it. I was wrong! He loves it! He loves to pull Thomas into the station and fill him up with steam.
The steam that comes out is illuminated with a red light so little ones can see it. It is also cool steam, so you don't need to worry about burns. Thomas also makes noises as it goes, blowing his whistle and chugging along.
The track fits together easily, and has several switches, a tunnel and bridge. Thomas and his trains stay on the track 90% of the time, but can be easily knocked off. There isn't much in the way of interactive play with this toy - just filling Thomas up with steam. Other train engines (sold seperatly) go much slower than Thomas, so you will need to have quick fingers at the switches to be sure they don't collide! We found that James goes at 1/2 the speed Thomas does! Also, small switches on Thomas make it hard for small children to control Thomas - our 5 year-old niece even had some problems and needed adult help. Adult supervision is definatly required.
My 2 year-old son loves this toy, but it is what it is - not too interactive, but he loves to make it go and push his wooden trains from his train table around next to the track.

Could Get You Steaming Yourself Dec 29, 2006
By K. C. Morrill My five year old son is a big fan of Thomas and has a good size collection going. He received this set for Christmas and we just got around to trying it out. It's somewhat disappointing. My son likes the sounds Thomas makes as he races around the track, but the steam part doesn't work very well. There are no puffs as Thomas goes around the track, and only an occasional puff when he stops at a station. I had little trouble getting the batteries in, but I have to agree with another reviewer that the directions leave something to be desired. Though my son is willing to play with it as it is, we both feel let down by this product. If you want to get it, be aware you may not get what you are hoping for.

Persistence paid off Jun 25, 2007
By Horror Fan I purchased this set for my 4 year old daughter who has loved everything about Thomas since she could walk. My husband and I set it up after she went to bed one night because we wanted it to be a surprise for her birthday the next morning. The track went together pretty easily. We followed the diagram on the back of the instruction pamphlet. Before I even purchased this set I had read many reviews about it so I already knew about the small black on/off switch under Annie and I made sure that it was on. I did find it a little difficult to insert the two batteries in the top of Annie because it was hard to unhook her "body" and lift it off. Once everything was assembled correctly I filled Thomas with water using the small tube that they provide. When I saw water coming out from under him I figured his "tank" was full. I turned the switch on top of Annie on and let them go. Thomas raced around the track and made all of the appropriate sounds with the little red light coming out of his funnel but NO STEAM AT ALL. We parked him under the water tower and pumped a few times to fill him again just in case. Water again ran out of the bottom, we let him go again and he still did not steam. We were ,of course, frustrated at this point. I took Annie apart all over again and inserted another set of three brand new batteries. I turned Thomas upside down and unscrewed the reservior section, I filled the little plastic tube with water and manually filled the reservior. Then while I held Thomas upright my husband attached the filled reservior to his underside. We let him go again and let him run for about two minutes, STILL NO STEAM. We noticed that they include a replacement wick/filter piece. I turned Thomas over again, replaced the small red filter, filled the reservior and assembled him again. STILL NO STEAM. I detached the reservior under Thomas again, removed the small red filter and squirted water directly into the hole where it had been. I reattached the filter and the filled reservior piece again. In frustration I tipped Thomas and Annie up side down (I had detached poor Clarabel at this point)and SHOOK them. I then refilled Thomas using the water tower and guess what? STEAM! LOTS OF STEAM! He has been working great ever since. How ridiculous though! I am sure most people are not going to spend the hour to hour and a half of set up time that it took us to get him to do what most people assume he will do right out of the box! Now that he is finally up and running there are no problems. My daughter was thrilled and plays with this constantly. This is a really good idea for a Thomas toy but it definitely has its glitches. I am sure there are some people who have been lucky to avoid these issues but I just wanted to let everyone know they do exist and it is not just because people are not reading the directions correctly.

Love the steam but poor compatibility Jan 14, 2007
By A. Williams My 3 year old absolutely loves the steam and fire, he does make a mess with the water at times, it is worth his joy though. My problem with this set is that I really wanted to expand it but there are many flaws when you try to buy the other sets. I tried to buy the Engine Wash set but the Steam Thomas with Annie does not stop in the right place to get washed because the stopper is on Annie. My son didn't want to have to switch engines every time he wanted to go to the Water Tower and then switch engines to go to the Engine Wash. I called the company they said someone would call me back about it but they never did, I took the Engine Wash set back. Then, I bought him the Sodor Expansion Set, although the other cars worked okay the Water Tower Station has an area that is too narrow for the Caboose to go through so he can't use the Caboose. I will say that the steam and fire are all worth it for my son to own, he calls it his fire choo choo and he LOVES it. I am dissappointed with the toy designers attention to detail. I will stop trying to expand this set and look into different systems for his next train purchase.
