Overhyped, underperforming. Stick with play dough! Sep 11, 2007
By Scarmig My kids have been screaming for Moonsand ever since the heavily marketed commercials came out. They got the Pet Shop set for a birthday present. In my opinion it is overpriced, over-hyped, and under-performing. The moonsand is very much like slightly damp sand. Not quite damp enough to actually stick together the way play-dough does, but enough to make molds and impressions. Very slight pressure causes it fall apart. Try to imagine using regular sand and picking up your sandcastle after it's dried in the sun a bit.
In addition, this stuff is *messy*! The sand acts like sand. It gets stuck on your hands and fingers, flakes off, and gets everywhere sand likes to get. This makes it worse for smaller children than play-dough, because small kids inevitably rub their faces with sand-covered hands, and smear the sand in the nose, eyes, and mouth. I know play-dough is safely passable if ingested... I'm not sure about this stuff.
Unfortunately, it doesn't clean up as easy as a bucket of sand does either. Real sand will stick to a damp towel. This stuff does not. Real sand that can't be picked up will dry out and can be easily vacuumed, but not this stuff. It's right on the bizarre line between too moist and too dry to clean up easily.
Not recommended for small kids. And recommended for *outdoor* play, unless you like purple sand in your carpet.
All in all, I would stick with play-dough for indoor creativity, and a real sandbox with a three dollar bag of play sand and a bucket of water for outdoor sand play. This stuff is all hype.

What a mess!! Nov 03, 2007
By P. Falstad "It's a nightmare," said my wife. I don't see how our five-year-old daughter can play with this stuff indoors without making a mess. The sand sticks to everything and gets everywhere. We put a plastic mat out to catch the sand, but that doesn't completely solve the problem. Everybody says this stuff is really cool but I don't see it. I'd stick with play dough.

Kids love it--just prepare for mess Dec 22, 2007
By S. King My boys love Moon Sand and I've actually had fun with it too. I just know that I need to be prepared for a mess. The sand castle set helps with the little sand box to store everything in. It's not something I can leave them to play on their own. But keeping that in mind, it's different enough from playdough to make it worth having (in addition to playdough which we love). My son adds that he recommends this toy to everyone!
Be Prepared for the Mess Jul 30, 2008
By Nuknuk Got this as a gift for our son. It is an artificial sand complete with molds and tools plus some added little toys. The sand have pretty candy colors and are very attractive. It is a lot of fun for the kids, but at the same time it is frustrating for them attempting to create critters with the molds as the sand crumbles very easily. It needs some help from grown-ups to press the mold harder to make a press. Still, once they hold them with their hands they crumbles. Obviously, not for kids who love to put things in their mouth.
It is just no way you can have this toy played inside the house especially near carpets or your couch. Be prepared for a big mess.

Moon Sand pet shop Jun 26, 2007
By likz2so Moon Sand didn't have that great of reviews, but it was recommended by autism related therapist as she used with her children. I like it; Tim likes it; it's not that messy with the sand castles container. I think I want to keep the colors separate.
