1Cheap Plastic Junk...  Dec 30, 2007 By Methusala "Methusala Czar"
I bought this with fond memories of my childhood lightbright. I honestly thought my 5 year old son would love this.

First, it's really cheaply made. Thin plastic junk, typical of the toys coming out today.
The drawer is convenient, but sticks. Almost every time we've opened, pegs have gone flying everywhere because of the difficulty in opening the drawer.
It is battery operated. You press the button and it automatically shuts off after 3 minutes. I'd prefer the electric type to this.
It doesn't stand up well, if at all.
You can't push a peg in without holding it or propping it against something. It's just not the toy I remember. I wouldn't buy this again and I definitely would not give this as a gift.

4fun use of fine motor skills  Jul 22, 2005 By S. T. Deluca
My 3 1/2 year old daughter loves playing with her lite brite. I have to say when she received it as a gift I cringed. I didn't think it had any educational value and the small pieces were going to get all over the house.

After watching her play with it, I have to say it enhances her fine motor skills when she has to pick up the small pegs and place them in the small holes, it also helps her identify letters and each colors initials i.e., p = purple, w = white, etc....all while creating a fun picture.

I'm going to get a few for gifts.

5Lite Brite heaven  Apr 03, 2005 By Melanie Gilbert
The working surface area on this unit is smaller than the original Lite Brite, but its compact size is probably more convenient for little hands and attention spans.

This newer model also features some improvements over the old classic including a drawer for the pegs, and the colored pegs joined into units of two, three and four pegs making for faster plugging and easier handling (see Customer Images). Can a multi-colored array of pegs offered in the format be far behnd?

This version of the Lite Brite line does not have the same impact as the original (which is not for sale on Amazon), and the battery-powered light, while low in glare, is not nearly as long-lasting or strong.

My thoughts for Hasbro: 1. Make more theme sheets such as the examples pictured in Customer Images (Customer Images under the item picture); 2. Make mutli-colored joined pegs; and 3. Distribute the lighting more evenly behind the working area; both the old and the new models capture all the light in the center of the frame.

But for under ten bucks, it's still one of the most engaging solitary games on the market.

5Huge Improvement over the old style  Jan 31, 2007 By C. Everhart "Cheri"
My 3 1/2 year old daughter received this as a Christmas gift and she loves it. The light only stays on when she needs it on, there is a storage drawer for the pegs and it runs on batteries. It's also flat so it takes up very little space.

My older children had the older model which had no storage drawer (and didn't fit back in the box once assembled), came with no light bulb and had such a short electrical cord the kids had to sit on the floor near an outlet to play with it. They never ended up playing with it, so I got rid of it.

This one is so much better! The only improvement to make so this toy is truly self contained would be to add a pocket for the pattern sheets.

Love it and would highly recommend it -- Just don't forget to buy the batteries with it!

1Don't buy this  Jan 04, 2009 By Beachy Betty "H L P"
This is NOT anywhere near as good as the Lite Brite I remember from childhood. Generally companies aim to improve thier products over time, but apparently Hasbro is only concerned with selling refill packs so that the poor child who gets stuck with this piece of junk can play with it more than 10 times. Gee, thanks. Now for an additional [...] my kid can enjoy his toy an additional 15 times. Real generous Hasbro. That's right -- the "flat screen" is really only black pieces of paper that you attach to the screen with the pegs, and once you've put a peg through the paper you cannot remove it without leaving a big, white hole. This leaves no room for error or change, something that was really frustrating for my son -- so much so that halfway through his first picture he asked if we could take it back to the store. Also, there's no "On/Off" switch. You turn it on by pressing a button, then 3 minutes later it turns off on it's own. How stupid is that? And the little compartment at the bottom that is used to store the pegs is IMPOSSIBLE to open. There is no way a child could get it open -- which could have been done on purpose, so that younger siblings don't get into and snack on the pegs -- but every time my husband or I manage to pry the thing open the pegs fly everywhere. Not cool. You'd think they could have come up with a better baby-proofing solution than that. I can't seem to find any of the classic style Lite Brites, so I may try to take the thing apart and paint the background black -- I figure I couldn't possibly make the thing more useless. Trust me: don't waste your money or ruin any of those great memories you may have of playing with a fun and functional Lite Brite as a child. "New and Impoved" couldn't be more wrong in this case.
