The Mel Torme of cartridges. Velvety smooth. Feb 15, 2013
By PCGuy This is the second time I have bought the Sonata, the first time I didn't know about the "Grado Hum" issue and I had a Music Hall MMF-5 and this cartridge had a significant hum on that turntable (Google Grado Hum Database). I only listened to it for two sides of a LP and really loved it compared to the Goldring 1012GX I was using at the time, and I really like the 1012GX. I really could not get the sound of the cartridge out of my head and I kept comparing everything else to it. My only solution was to get a turntable that this would not have hum issues with. Fast forward a month or two and a handful of cartridges (Ortofon 2M Red, 2M Blue, Goldring 1012GX, 1042, Eroica H, Sumiko Oyster, Pearl, Blue Point No 2 and a Denon DL-110) and I still had that Grado sound stuck in my head so I bought a Music Hall MMF-7 and a Grado Reference Platinum. I was finally happy!! Well at least until the Vendor must have finally put the one I returned back into stock and I just had to buy it again!
So I am finally enjoying my vinyl, MMF-7 plus the Sonata is just a stellar combination for the music I listen to. A+!
One note, I still do pickup a very faint hum but I believe that has to do with the really high gain of my Jolida JD9 preamp, I didn't notice as much when I was using a Bellari VP130. If I had owned the Jolida when I purchased this, I would have probably gotten the low output .5mv version instead of the high output 4.0mv.
