Not Bad for a Neon-clad General Jan 01, 2012
By Jumpercliff In 1993, Hasbro offered a wide variety of mail-order exclusive G.I. Joe figures, which could be redeemed via inserts found with most regular retail figures. Among them was a repaint of G.I. Joe's head honcho himself, General Hawk, who was available from the inserts titled "Menace in the Wilderness".
Sculpt and Paint The figure is a repaint of the 1991 version of General Hawk, which originally came with a jetpack with missiles. This figure, for the most part, could double as "Hawk in space". He's clad in a green jumpsuit, with black gloves, boots, holster, and molded webgear, and yellow ribbing on the upper arms, the sides of the legs and torso, and yellow grenades. His cowl is also painted black, and he has brown hair, eyebrows, and pupils. Interestingly, I noticed that if you replaced all the yellow with silver, and switched out his head with a certain one, this figure could make an outer space-ops version of the Joe character Sci-Fi (though he already had a Star Brigade figure at the time). Purists would decry the bright and neon color palette on this figure (as neon permeated throughout the line in the early 90's), but it's a bit of a fun choice of colors, something the kids would like.
Articulation Hawk is poseable at the shoulders, elbows, waist, knees, and head, and can do a good variety of poses. When you do turn his head, you may want to turn his helmet as well.
Accessories Hawk comes with recolored versions of the 1991 figure's helmet (in yellow), visor (clear gold), and rifle (neon green), along with a black figure stand and, strangely, a black version of the Sonic Fighters Major Bludd's electronic flight pack. It has four gray buttons for each of the four sounds. The pack requires three 357-A batteries to operate, so one would have to take a small screwdriver and unscrew the underside of the pack. The box it's in is kind enough to have instructions printed on (along with various warnings about battery leakage and choking hazards). In addition to the sounds, there are two red little lights that flicker when any of the buttons are pressed. Hawk also comes with a file card. A small warning regarding the weapon and the stand: Hawk's hands and feet are made of hard and brittle plastic, and can crack or break easily, so be careful when getting him to hold his rifle or putting him on the stand.
Overall This is a figure that serves two purposes, depending on the recipient: for the kids, it's a fun toy to play with, lights and sounds and all. For the completist collectors, a necessary addition for having the complete 3 3/4" G.I. Joe line.
