 Lacquer Flaked Off after Four Months May 06, 2009

Nice looking but the black lacquer bubbled and flaked off after four months of use. Amazon will not take a refund after 30 days, and Cross wants $10 to honor their lifetime warranty on their inexpensive pen. Not a good purchase experience at all.

There is no doubt that both the pen and the pencil are made from quality materials and their workmanship are excellent as well.
You should just be aware that when you use up a pencil lead, you would have to remove the cap and the blue eraser and take out a new lead that was stored inside the pen barrel, replace the eraser and cap, then manually insert the lead into the pencil from the TIP of the pencil! Other than the likelihood of getting your fingers soiled from handling the bare pencil lead, if you are over 45 years of age, your eyesight may not easily allow you to aim the lead accurately into the tip of the pencil! This is unlike those inexpensive but excellent Japanese mechanical pencils that will auto-feed a new lead when an old one is used up.
I bought this pen and pencil set for its look and feel. If you want convenience when using the pencil, I think the regular Japanese mechanical pencils are better.

Got this set for my friends and they love it! Classy but not expensive... I paid $15 for the set. Cross Hamilton is a good brand name product.

This pen and pencil set is a joy to use and its classic design makes it appear like a higher end writing instrument. Dependable Cross quality is hard to beat. I only wish they made a roller ball to match.
